Air Quality Impacts our Well-being in our Daily Lives

Threats of “Bad Air”

Air quality impacts our well-being in our daily lives. Every year, there are approximately 7 million premature deaths caused by the exposure of air pollution. Concerning this regard, WHO has implemented new Global Air Guidelines, aiming to save millions of lives from air pollution.

Six Pollutants

Six pollutants are identified with having serious effects on health, including particulate matter (PM), ozone (O₃), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) sulfur dioxide (SO₂), Lead (Pb) and carbon monoxide (CO). WHO has recommended guidelines for air quality levels for these pollutants. By taking actions to control them, it also has impacts on other air pollutants.

Serious Health Risks!

Evidently, there is a range of health risks associated with the above pollutants. For example, exposure to PM equal or smaller than 10 and 2.5 microns (µm) in diameter (PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅, respectively) can lead to serious health issues. They can penetrate deep into lungs and even enter bloodstream, resulting in cardiovascular and respiratory illness as well as dysfunction of other organs.
